Watercolors

Epple painted watercolors throughout his life. His early post-war work included landscapes as well as abstractions of dolls, windows, and boats. Inspired by several visits to Italy, in the mid 1950s and early 1960s, his themes included Sicilian Villages, ruins of buildings and Greek temples and abstract renditions of Italian churches and cityscapes. Beginning in the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, the topics of Epple’s watercolors were inspired by the natural world of trees and flowers, rocks and mountains, and above all shells. Below are a few examples of his work.
